The Perfect Candidate

Education: Minimum Bachelor's degree in business, education, social studies or other people-based disciplines. Technical degrees may be useful, but may tend to produce less flexibility and lower people skills. Nursing or medicine may be an exception.

Experience: Minimum 7 years post-graduation experience in medium to large organization(s), or entrepreneurial experience in one's own business. The understanding and acceptance of hierarchy, order, authority, procedures and common goals is important. At the same time, the ability to think independently is a major asset.

Personal Characteristics

Extrovert: The successful candidate will be an extrovert with a desire to interact with strangers on a regular basis. Someone with emotional warmth who is comfortable in their own skin and enjoys human contact will be more likely to enjoy this job than a lone wolf. The job places the manager under occasional stress.

Ambitious: The successful candidate should be goal oriented with a bias toward growth. In other words, ambitious. (And, have demonstrated this in the past). While this is a small company, it has the potential to grow dramatically and the candidate should welcome the opportunity to exchange aggressive and successful performance for increasing rewards. Our number one objective is growth and we are looking for someone who can share that objective and be instrumental in making it happen.

Precision: The job requires an orderly mind, a desire for precision and a respect
for professional behavior. From organizing the prospecting program (new Clinics
with existing partners and finding new partners) to delivering the curriculum,
there are right ways and wrong ways. The candidate should have a desire to do
things efficiently, consistently and professionally.
Optimism/Security/Independence: The District Manager operates without
significant day-to-day supervision. That means that s/he must be self-starting,
not easily discouraged and secure because the support structure is slim. This is
very much akin to running your own business. No one tells you what time to get
up or how late to stay up or what to do in between. Goals will be set mutually,
progress monitored and performance reviews given, but not hour-to-hour or
day-to-day.
Intangibles: Here are some of the qualities that may be positive (or negative)
in this environment:
Romanticism: ACCT provides a life-improving service for both students and
parents. For students we deliver physical and mental skills that have actually
proven to be life saving. In addition to saving lives, these skills provide
confidence and self-esteem. For parents the benefit is first, security (or at
least improved knowledge) concerning their child’s skills; and secondly,
satisfaction from doing the best they can for their children. The successful
candidate will be enriched and rewarded by that process and derive satisfaction
beyond the standard measures of employment. Previous coaching experience would
be a plus.
Structure: While our program is highly structured in its goals and what we
teach, the vagary of locations and facilities requires much flexibility. Lack of
mental and emotional flexibility can be a potential problem. “Stay loose” is our
operating motto.
Enthusiasm: One of the oft-mentioned qualities of the Disney experience is the
enthusiasm expressed by their public-contact employees. This is not an accident,
and we seek to emulate that quality in our staff.
Perspective: We have no control over the raw material we are given via the
registration process. Each day we face 10 to 20 new sets of parent/child
relationships. Caring about each while caring about all is a sensitive balance
that must be maintained while we fight the clock to accomplish all we have
promised for that session. Maintaining perspective and priorities under that
pressure is always a challenge. The ability to see issues as they develop during
the training is critical to a smooth, successful day for everyone.
Dedication: The successful candidate has demonstrated the ability to study,
consider, absorb and become a confident expert in their subject. We will want to
learn how much they know about the business they are now in.
