Bring the New Driver Car Control Clinic to Your Town

Want to bring The New Driver Car Control Clinic to your town? Here's all you need to know, our requirements and some tips on how to generate local support.

Here is how a Car Control Weekend works:

1. The 90-minute classroom portion of the Clinic is held on a Friday evening--usually from 6:30 to 8:00. We need enough auditorium-style space to hold a minimum of 60 people and a maximum of 120.

High school auditoriums and cafeterias, community colleges, large churches and athletic stadiums work.

2. The hands-on, in-car accident avoidance and defensive driving portion of the Clinics takes place on Saturday and Sunday. We train in groups of ten teams at a time. The Clinics run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here's what we need for the in-car portion of the Clinic:

    A. Minimum 250 feet by 250 feet of unobstructed pavement (gravel or dirt won't work). We can work around light poles, such as in abandoned shopping center parking lots, or the parking lot of a local high school. But we cannot work around the concrete bumpers many lots have at the head of each parking space. We carry a four million-dollar liability policy, but have never had so much as a broken fingernail in the ten years we've been holding these Clinics around the country.

    B. Each parent/student team uses their own car and should bring the car the student is most likely to end up driving. Each student must have at least a valid Learner's Permit. Full licenses are okay too.

3. Tuition & Expenses:

A. Tuition-- Parents usually pay the $179 per team tuition. This covers tuition for one teen, one or two parents, the training, liability insurance, plus a 56-page workbook containing 10 exercises and a 45-minute video of the curriculum. Each student receives a Certificate of Completion for submission to an insurance company for a possible discount. We require a minimum of 30 teams, or $4,770.

    B. Expenses-- The sponsoring organization funds roundtrip mileage from Melbourne, Florida at $0.375/mile (or 2 roundtrip coach-class air tickets, depending on your location) to Your Town, plus two single hotel rooms for Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights.

    C. Deposit-- A deposit of $3,885 is required to hold the reserved date for the clinic.  This represents 50% of the minimum of 30 teams and the travel expenses.

4. Funding-- When thinking about raising the funds to bring The New Driver Car Control Clinic to your town, consider the following.

Sponsors could be:

  • Civic clubs -- Rotary, Lions

  • Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs)

  • Churches

  • School Districts

  • Health Service Organizations

  • Independent insurance agents

  • Local safety council

  • Newspaper/TV station/Radio station

  • Women's clubs -- Junior League, etc.

  • Children's hospital

  • Local doctor's group

  • Sheriff's department/local police department

Sponsor identification can be included on the Certificate of Completion and all promotional material. Enterprising sponsors may want to fund a portion of the fee for all students or provide scholarships for families that can't afford the tuition.

5. Registration -- We provide online reservations via www.carcontrol.com and a toll-free reservation line -- 800-862-3277. We accept all reservations and credit card payment from the registering parents.

6. Promotion and Publicity -- Securing the locations and getting the word out are the sponsoring organization's most important responsibilities. Here are some things we will do to help you publicize the Clinic and fill the required spots.

    A. We provide a custom web page for Your Town's clinics.

    B. We provide artwork for a mailing piece. The sponsoring organization needs to have the piece printed, obtain the labels from the local high schools and pay for the postage.

    C. We provide all local media with a press release announcing the arrival of the Clinic.

    D. The Clinic founder, David Thompson, will be available by phone prior to the Clinic for any newspaper, radio/TV talk-show interviews. He will also be available on Friday for any press interviews or putting any members of the media through the course, or conducting a mini-clinic for the sponsor's employees or customers.
