Teen Driver Training Program Reduces Crashes by 61% Over Three Years
melbourne, florida -- David Thompson, author and founder of the New Driver Car Control Clinic, announced today the results of a four-year study of the crash experience of teen drivers trained in the Clinic's accident avoidance and defensive driving curriculum. Using Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles official driving records, the analysis of the driving behavior of 229 randomly chosen graduates from 1999 and 2000 New Driver Car Control Clinics showed that the Clinic's students had 61% fewer crashes than their statewide peers of the same age during the same years. But Thompson's real enthusiasm is for the consistency revealed in the statistics -- namely that most of the students maintained their crash-free behavior over the three-year observation period. In a New Driver Car Control Clinic students and their parents (Thompson does not accept a teen without a parent) perform a series of exercises learning how to use their eyes, hands and feet to steer away from obstacles while braking suddenly and heavily. These exercises are performed both on dry and wet pavement. "Driving is a psychomotor skill," Thompson explains. "Just like learning to play the piano requires an actual keyboard, so does learning to control an automobile in an emergency require one to actually drive a car. Our Clinic is based on the idea that in order to properly manage those inevitable first few accident situations, drivers must learn and practice the proper responses. We do that by creating mini-accidents." Thompson's method, borne out by the statistical evidence, is that unless you have pre-programmed your brain to react properly in a panic situation, you will panic, you will lock up the brakes and you will crash. "This hands-on training is the missing link in driver education," Thompson says. "It goes beyond the basics, involves the parents and concentrates on teaching teen drivers what to expect and how to respond when their car enters the 'emergency zone.'" Each Clinic is limited to 10 parent-teen teams and costs $135 per team. Teens need to have at least a Learner's Permit. Each team receives a 56-page workbook and a 45-minute video detailing all exercises performed in the Clinic so that they may continue to practice on their own, and a Certificate of Completion for submission to their insurance company for a possible discount. Clinics are held in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Ohio, and are available in the rest of the country by special arrangement. Advance reservations are required.
